The inauguration of the WIEF-UiTM International Centre, which was officially opened by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, will be held on the 26th February 2008 at the Annexe Hall, UiTM Shah Alam by the President of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB), Dr. Ahmed Mohamed Ali. The Centre is one of the initiatives under the WIEF Education Trust (WET), a task force led by its Chairman Tan Sri Wan Zahid Noordin and created by the World Islamic Economic Forum. The idea of the WIEF-UiTM International Centre came about due to the urgent need to consolidate and strengthen collaboration in education in the Muslim world. The Centre, funded by the Islamic Development Bank and UiTM, focuses on bringing together distinguished scholars, business leaders, industry practitioners and academics from around the world to plan for initiatives that will promote scholarship, knowledge advancement and competencies upgrading for the Muslim world at large. Some of the first pilot programmes of the International Centre would include the research collaboration on biotechnology, one of the most promising areas of research for the future, and a research initiative on technical training, to increase human capital capacity for the Muslim world. These are two programmes concluded during the 2nd World Islamic Economic Forum in Islamabad, 5th November 2006. Attendees to this event would comprise of academics, business leaders, professionals and the media.
